Warning signs

Signs of a Hot Water Slab Leak

A hot water slab leak shows many of the same signs as any slab leak, plus a few that point specifically to the hot side:

A warm or hot spot on the floor, often on tile, with no sunlight or heat source to explain it

Your water heater runs more than usual, or you hear it refilling when nobody is using water

Hot water runs out faster than it used to, or comes out lukewarm

Your gas or electric bill goes up along with your water bill

The sound of running water near the water heater or under the floor

Your water meter keeps moving when all water in the house is turned off

One sign alone doesn’t confirm a slab leak. A warm spot plus a rising water bill, or a water heater that never seems to rest, is a pattern worth checking right away.

Why it matters

Why Hot Water Leaks Cost You Twice

Hot water lines go through constant heating and cooling. Over time, that repeated stress can cause them to fail sooner than the cold lines beside them.

And a hot water leak isn’t just wasting water. Every gallon escaping under your slab has already been heated. Your water heater keeps working to replace it, so you pay for the water and the energy to heat it, around the clock, until the leak is fixed.

Do it yourself

Is It Your Hot Water Line? A Quick Check You Can Do

You can often tell whether a leak is on the hot side in a few minutes, using your water meter and the valve on your water heater.

1

Turn off all water in the house:

faucets, showers, the dishwasher, the washing machine, and the ice maker. Make sure nobody flushes during the test.

2

Look at your water meter.

If the dial or small leak indicator is moving with everything off, water is escaping somewhere.

3

Close the cold water inlet valve on your water heater.

This is the valve on the pipe that feeds cold water into the top of the tank. Turn it gently; don’t force an old valve that’s stuck.

4

Look at the meter again.

If it stops moving, the leak is most likely on the hot side. If it keeps moving, the leak is likely on the cold side or elsewhere.

Before you assume it’s under the slab, check these first:

  • The water heater’s relief valve: Find the discharge pipe that runs from the side or top of the water heater, often to the outside. If water is dripping or running from it, the problem may be the water heater itself.
  • The water heater base: Check for water pooling around the bottom of the tank.
  • Hot water hoses: Check the hot water hose on your washing machine and any hot-side fixtures for drips.

A note on recirculation pumps and tankless heaters: If your home has a hot water recirculation system or a tankless water heater, this test may not give a clear answer. Call us and we’ll walk you through it.

This test tells you which side is leaking. It can’t tell you where the leak is. That takes professional detection.

What to Do Right Now

If you think your hot water line is leaking under the slab:

Then call us. We’re open 24 hours at 1 (951) 355-0459.

  • Close the cold water inlet valve on your water heater. This stops water from flowing into the hot side until the leak is repaired. You’ll have cold water in the house, but no hot water.
  • If water is coming up through the floor, shut off your main water valve.
  • Take photos of warm spots, damp flooring, and your water meter.
  • Write down what you’ve noticed and when it started.
  • Don’t let anyone open the floor until the leak’s exact location has been confirmed.

Detection

How We Find a Hot Water Slab Leak

1

We confirm the leak is on the hot side

by isolating the hot and cold lines.

2

We trace the leak under the slab.

Hot-side leaks warm the concrete above them, which can help narrow down the area.

3

We mark the exact spot,

so any repair is targeted.

4

We walk you through what we found

and give you a detection report with repair recommendations.

A standard slab leak detection visit takes 1 to 3 hours.

Repair Options for a Hot Water Slab Leak

Once the leak is located, the right fix depends on where it is and the condition of the pipe.

Rerouting is a common choice for hot water slab leaks. The leaking hot line under the slab is capped, and a new line is run through the walls or attic. Your floor stays untouched, and the failing section is replaced with new pipe instead of being patched.

If a hot water line has already leaked once, the other hot lines under your slab are usually the same age and material. That’s worth factoring into the decision.

See our slab leak rerouting, slab leak repair, and whole-house repipe pages for details on each option.

The longer a hot water leak runs, the more you pay in wasted water and energy, so it’s worth getting it located quickly.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

It should be dealt with quickly. Water is escaping under your foundation, and your water heater is working nonstop to replace it. If water is coming up through the floor, shut off your main water valve and call right away. If not, closing the water heater’s cold inlet valve stops the hot-side flow until help arrives.

Usually, yes. With the water heater’s cold inlet valve closed, you can typically still use cold water normally. You just won’t have hot water until the leak is repaired.

Heat from a leaking hot water line travels up through the concrete closest to the leak. That often creates a warm patch over or near where the leak is, which is one reason hot-side leaks can be easier to trace.

Yes. A failing relief valve or a leak at the base of the tank can also waste water and keep your heater running. Check the relief valve’s discharge pipe and the base of the tank before assuming the leak is under the slab.

It depends on your policy. Many policies cover resulting water damage, and sometimes the cost of accessing the leak, when it was sudden and accidental. Repairing the failed pipe itself is often excluded. Check your own policy with your insurance provider.

The repaired section shouldn’t, but other old hot lines under the slab can fail later. A reroute replaces the failing run with new pipe above the slab, and if leaks keep happening, a repipe takes the under-slab lines out of service for good.
